Goodness

I’m being called to move in rhythm with the sun this summer, waking up at dawn and going to bed at sunset. Part of my new early morning routine is walking. I have many routes but today the beach was calling.

It was almost desolate except half dozen other people. Walking down the beach, I saw a young woman with arms covered in tattoos walking along the row of seaweed left by the high tide. She was carrying a large white plastic bag and laden with stuff. Maybe she’s an artist collecting shells… then she reached down to pick up an old solo cup. A hundred feet later an elderly gentleman carrying a long metal rod passed by. Curious, I turned to watch him use the metal rod to poke around in a large pile seaweed and retrieve a paper plate and place it in a blue plastic bag. At the far end of the beach, a middle-aged woman walked along the tidal river with a clear plastic bag.

It suddenly dawned on me the Earthkeepers are out tending to the beach before the gates open at 8am. Cleaning up the mess left by many, returning the beach to its natural pristine state. This is an act of love and a soul’s calling. It reminded me of the goodness in our world. If we keep our eyes and hearts open, we’ll find it.

Let goodness be

The salve

For thee

With headlines filled with hate, war and turmoil, maybe we can be the antidote for ourselves and others. Following the Earthkeepers example, by opening our hearts to offer an act of goodness to mother earth or those that inhabit her.

Goodness begets goodness. Its energy ripples — a powerful force of love.  We can be the change. All it takes is one simple act of goodness a day.
